Charles Waterworth's birth was registered in York in the 1st quarter of 1901 and he appears on the census of 31st March aged 3 months, making it very likely he was actually born in January of that year. On the afternoon of 2nd August 1912 Charles was apparently playing at the edge of the swollen River Ouse at King's Staith, with his Hoop & Stick. The York Press of the same day reports that he lost is balance trying to recover the 'stick' and fell into the flooded river. A young man called Percy Storey (aged 16) of 2 Cumberland Street attempted a rescue using a boat from a nearby stand, but was too late and Charles drowned. At the time of Charles' death he was living with his parents and 5 Brothers and Sisters at 33 Farrar Street, York. Charles' Father Joseph was at this time employed at the Corporation Smith's Shop, Foss Islands. Charles is buried in York Cemetery in the plot originally purchased for his Aunt (Annie Nicholson) in 1886 by her Father Joseph Waterworth. Also buried in the plot are Joseph himself and his wife Mary who died in 1917. |
