Mary Waterworth with Grandson Joe - Belle Vue Lodge

Mary was born on 8th December 1825, the second daughter of George and Elizabeth Pickard. The earliest record for Mary is the 1841 census which records her in the township of Blacktoft where she was employed as an agricultural labourer aged 14.

Mary Pickard next appears in the 1851 census aged 24 in Old Goole where on 30th March she is now employed as a general servant. Old Goole is an area of farmland to he south of Goole town which, according to the census enumerators report, incorporates the village of Old Goole, the fields, the bank and the moors. Mary appears on page 8 of the census whilst her future husband Joseph Waterworth is recorded on page 9. As the couple were living and working very close to one another it can be assumed that this where they met.

Mary and Joseph were married in Howden in 1852. Shortly afterwards they moved to Bubwith and their first child Elizabeth was born in 1854 The census of Sunday 7th April 1861 lists them at 83 Main Street with four children all of whom were born in Bubwith. Mary's elder sister Elizabeth is also living on Main Street (number 73) in 1861 with husband William Fowler.

Ten years later the family have moved to York, where Joseph is employed as groom and gardener and living at Belle Vue Lodge, part of The Retreat Estate on Heslington Road.  The couple have four further children, two of which were employed but still living with their parents. Mary's widowed Mother Elizabeth Pickard is also living with them aged 68.

The Family remained at Belle Vue Lodge as shown on the 1881 and 1891 census records.
